Wiggle Hell of Hexham

The Wiggle Hell of Hexham sportive might make your legs think you’re sinking halfway into the underworld by the time you’re finished with its continuous supply of testing climbs, but you’re in for one hell of a day all the same with spectacular views on sprawling cycling roads that see over the Tyne Valley, through the North Pennines and beyond.

With the Epic route lined with more than 3,500m of climbing, you’ll need to come to this armed for an uphill battle – quite literally. But as much as the testing hills will chip away at your tired legs, the stunning surroundings make up for the pain as you’ll absorb unique Northumberland natural beauty that is seldom seen anywhere else in the world.

Heading onto the North Pennines for starters, life begins out of the saddle on this event as you’ll start on the back-foot with a testing series of climbs straight away. Moving out towards Catton, making it through the bare and exposed country roads can be a challenge in itself without taking the tough gradient into consideration. The country lanes remain quiet and mostly car-free though and you’re sure to rise to the challenge.

Continuing to battle the hill-side surroundings, you’ll follow the River West down to Carr Shield and Coalcleugh, which are a tough challenge to climb through. Passing abandoned mines and out-of-season ski lifts, the sense of remoteness through these parts should ignite your quest for escapism. Moving south, you’ll soon take on the feared ‘White Hill’, passing Bollinghope Common, after which unparalleled views wait atop a stunning hillside.

With one last test on ‘Long Hill’ (clue’s in the name), you’re left to take in the beautiful views across Tyne Valley and Hexham Common before crossing the finish line for a very well-earned medal, t-shirt and Powerbar recovery product.

Key Information

Kids ride Free!

We want to encourage young riders to enjoy the pleasure of cycling. That's why all riders under 16 years ride for free when accompanied by a paying adult!

Online pre-entry

Online pre-entry is the easiest way of entering and saves £3.00 per person vs. entering on the day. Online pre-entry will save you time on the day of the event allowing you to simply pick up your registration pack from the Pre entered registration points. Please note: If an event reaches its capacity we will have to close the event to riders wanting to enter on the day. It is therefore best to pre enter online to avoid disappointment!

On the day entry

On the day entries are available at all our events as long as the event has not sold out prior to the event day. On the day entries are subject to an additional £3.00 per person surcharge. Payment can be made with cash or cheque. You can fill out an entry form when you arrive at the event. One entry form must be completed per person. Wiggle Customers will not be able to receive any loyalty discounts on the day.

Awards

Although all our rides are non competitive events (i.e. not races), most people still like to know how well they've done. With this in mind we will time each participants ride. When you complete your ride your time will be calculated and these timings, along with the timing Award you achieved, will be displayed on the Website. Each rider will receive a timing award of either; bronze, silver or gold, depending on their average speed. Of course, some riders aren't bothered about all these awards and just cycle for the experience and stunning scenery.

Event photography by SportivePhoto
